Clinton County is named for De Witt Clinton, advocate for the Erie Canal and governor of New York.

The seat and largest city is Clinton. It borders Jackson, Scott, Cedar and Jones counties in Iowa along with Rock Island, Whiteside and Carroll Counties in Illinois.
